Personally

Don’t take it personally.
I like to think of my emotions
as the opposite of a tax return:
the less I claim, the better off I am.

Life

We never get what we want,
We never want what we get,
We never have what we like,
We never like what we have.
And still we live & love.
That's life...

when you refuse to believe it

From the Editor's Computer

Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent.  It takes a touch of genius - and a lot of courage - to move in the opposite direction.  ~E.F. Schumacher

Human beings have the remarkable capacity to take the simple and obvious and make it chaotic and complicated.

Ever tried, through sheer force of will, to fall asleep?  How effective were you?

Much of life works the same way as falling asleep.  You can't will it to happen no matter how much effort you expend.  You have to allow yourself to let it happen.

The best method for falling asleep is to stop trying.  Either get up and do something else till you feel relaxed and tired, or choose to lie there with the intent of just lying there - no stress, no strain, no effort.

When we stop expending the majority of our energy trying to move forward, create, accomplish, complete or browbeat, whatever we are striving so hard to bring about tends to just happen, almost before we even realize it.

When circumstances aren't working in your life, perhaps it is to step back, take a deep breath (or a lot of breaths!), and stop trying.  Let happen what is going to happen.

When you step back and allow life to unfold as it will, you may find that you have more energy to enjoy your life.

If you surrender completely to the moments as they pass, you live more richly those moments. ~ Anne Morrow Lindbergh

Act

A little knowledge that acts
is worth infinitely more

Light

People [are] stained-glass windows:
we’re all different and unique
in our designs, colors, and themes,
but the light that shines through your window
is the same light that shines through mine.

Ashore

The fishermen know that the sea
is dangerous and the storm terrible,
but they have never found these dangers
 sufficient reason for remaining ashore.

The impulse to act, serve, and help
is imbedded in the experience
of compassion.

From the Editor's Computer

We can make our minds so like still water that beings gather about us to see their own images and so live for a moment with a clearer, perhaps even a fiercer life because of our silence.  - William Butler Yeats

Contrary to what some people believe, we do not take on, or internalize, the peace or the turmoil in our surroundings, we contribute to the states around us.

It is said that the inner world reflects the outer world.  Unless you experience a state of being within, you will not be able to share it with others.

For example, peaceful surroundings will not make a person feel peaceful unless they are already in a state of peace.  Just as chaos and turmoil will not make a person chaotic or violent unless they are already conflicted.

We bring to every environment we encounter our prevalent state of being - whether calm or not, whether loving or not.
