Looking behind, I am filled with gratitude.
Looking forward, I am filled with vision.
Looking upward, I am filled with strength.
And looking within, I discover peace.

Beth's Ponderings

   OH...MY...GOSH!...20 WHOLE YEARS!!!!!!

I had great plans for the wonderful witty words I was going to share regarding this great milestone, however, my week did a bit of a loop-de-loop on me, with Monday being a blood appointment (dramatic improvement from 6 months ago!) and the installation of my first ever art exhibition (Yippee!), followed by discovering Tuesday morning that someone smashed the driver side window on both my car and truck (took ALL day to deal with that hassle).  So, I decided to pull comments I made from previous anniversaries...

From the 5th anniversary issue: “if I had had the ability to see into the future to today, I’m not entirely sure if I would have taken on this task. Or, if I had, I doubt I would have been quite so cavalier in my acceptance of this mantle bestowed upon me.”

From the 10th anniversary issue: “I took on the task of publishing The Chautauqua not knowing how I would manage it, only knowing I'd figure it out eventually. Of course, life took some unexpected turns that month (okay, when doesn't my life take unexpected turns?), so I not only had to quickly figure out how to put the paper together and send it to the Advocate electronically, I also had a very short time frame to register for my first course in my online Master degree program. Nothing like deadlines and intense pressure to get the blood pumping.”

From the 15th anniversary issue: “it is not only ironic that I have published a newspaper...but that I was even given the opportunity in the first place, AND that I accepted it!...I still can’t really say why the paper appeals to me so much, only that it is a not only a unique creative outlet, but also a creative challenge as I strive to make it something that even I would enjoy reading, and I hope that you enjoy too.”

While my life has changed a lot, as have our communities, one thing that has stayed the same is the fun and joy I have received from publishing each and every issue.  Thank you so much for your continued support throughout the years.  I could not have done it without you all!

Beth's Ponderings

Here we are again, at the beginning of a brand new year - a year full of so much possibility and potential.

Now, there are some people who will tell you that you need to fill up your calendar at the beginning of the year with tasks and activities throughout the months so you don’t end up looking back in December to find you wasted the year.

While that might work for some people, I, personally, prefer an open calendar that gets filled in the moment, and still has space for breathing.

That said, I do have some items on my January calendar already.  The 7-week voice/singing/songwriting program starts January 20th, and...it’s finally here!!!  My art exhibition - Persistent Creativity Everyday: a whimsical journey - will be at the Corridor Community Gallery, in the lower level of the Recreation Centre, 4501-47A Ave., in Red Deer, from January 11 to February 28!!!! More information (after January 10th)  here: https://www.reddeer.ca/recreation-and-culture/arts-and-culture/artgalleries/current-exhibits/ and here: www.reddeerevents.ca/ This is a very exciting month for me, and I’ll have more to share next issue.
