Beth's Ponderings

If you’ve been reading my columns for any length of time, and/or known me a long time, you would know that I’m drawn to quirky information that provides simple ways for us to make our lives better.

I recently received an email about yawning and the health effects associated with it. Yes, yawning. Something we do naturally, and sometimes stifle if we’re not in a situation where yawning is socially acceptable. Yet, this natural reaction is very important for overall health.

"Yawning stimulates a part of the brain called the precuneus. Yawning supports our sense of being more self-aware and decreases anxiety. It also supports regulation of the brain's temperature and metabolism, bringing a sense of increased cognitive awareness and relaxation." (Dr. Andrew Newberg)

In other words, if you are worrying - yawn. If you are feeling tense - yawn. If you are feeling like your brain is in overdrive - yawn. If you’ve been dealing with a difficult person - yawn (but, it might be a good idea to wait till you are away from the person). If you have a headache - yawn. If you are spending a lot of time in front of a computer - yawn. If you want a simple way to detox your body - yawn.

Just 5 minutes of yawning daily could impact your health and life.
