Beth's Ponderings
I recently finished
reading “You-turn” by Ashley Stahl. Last
year I had heard an interview with the author and was intrigued enough to want
to read her book.
A You-turn is when
you face a moment when you have no choice but to go a different direction in
your life, and often that new direction brings you closer to the path you would
have been on if you’d listened to your heart in the first place.
One of the author’s
theme that I really liked was that she highlighted that we should not do what
we love (she considers that very poor career advice), and instead do what we
ARE (our core values and natural talents/skills).
For instance, while
we may love such activities as cooking, flower arranging, eating pizza, or
playing hockey, that doesn’t mean that we should make a career out of those
activities and become a professional chef, open a flower shop or pizzeria, or
try to get into the NHL.
On the other hand,
if your core values and natural talents align with those activities, then that
may be a good career fit for you. It is
more about following your natural strengths, not just what you enjoy.
It seems that as life gets more hectic and fast-paced, many people have given up on hobbies - those activities that we do just for the sheer joy of doing them. Maybe it’s time to revisit some of those activities you love - not to monetize them - just to bring more joy into your life?
